It's almost like all of these little things make up our generational culture. I really love that I could go up to someone I didn't know who grew up around the same time I did and go, "Remember when...?" and they would probably go "Oh Ya!"

Remember Pogs? Pokemon? Beanie Babies? The list goes one!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-78003412284980493052012-08-17T17:20:32.351-06:002012-08-17T17:20:32.351-06:00I really enjoyed your post. Telling your personal story through photos was a really effective method. Although our lives are quite different, I too was an M&M one halloween and had to wear a snow suit underneath. Good ol' Canadian winters, starting in October.kuhcnelysawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02127164016225754396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-23409114870269313922012-08-17T17:19:32.541-06:002012-08-17T17:19:32.541-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.kuhcnelysawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02127164016225754396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-42393314925937982662012-08-16T23:01:39.336-06:002012-08-16T23:01:39.336-06:00I just wanted to let you know how much I thoroughl...I just wanted to let you know how much I thoroughly enjoyed your post. You captured an experience that almost everyone participates in through a photograph collection, and articulated its significance very well. I especially like the story where you have the same picture as your parents at the legislature, as it ties two generations together in the same moment.

Your post really captured how photographs are such a great source for documenting history, especially with an interesting back story to accompany it.
Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11972808587778789719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-37908593438344107762012-08-16T23:01:21.797-06:002012-08-16T23:01:21.797-06:00Sometimes I wonder whether photos are becoming mor...Sometimes I wonder whether photos are becoming more and more staged because of digital cameras and their ability to delete pictures instantly. I certainly delete pictures I don't like right away - people only see the pictures that I 'approve' of, for the most part (I'm a vain person, hehe). It's kind of like we're going back in time when everybody looked the same in pictures - now everyone just has their best face om instead of looking stoic. So pictures might become more of a reflection of how we want others to see us.

I'm don't have much to complain about though - I'd rather people not see anything unflattering. I always said that if I were to write an autobiography, I'd leave out a lot.
;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-9700427318937924812012-08-16T20:52:10.845-06:002012-08-16T20:52:10.845-06:00I loved reading about your family, and your mom se...I loved reading about your family, and your mom seems wonderful! I particularly liked your points about the importance of oral history in the absence of anything else. I also agree that photos, at times, reflect what we want to remember, and so photos may not tell an entire story but I think that's ok.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-49568968610405265572012-08-16T20:07:39.293-06:002012-08-16T20:07:39.293-06:00Wow, as I was reading your story, I did reflect my...Wow, as I was reading your story, I did reflect my own immigrant experiences and truly collecting family photos is documenting history. Your parents picture (banff trip) is similar to my sisters and mine when we made a trip to banff to explore the place for the first time:). The picture was clicked at the same place. khushbohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07059458103695719122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4708293341776725992.post-37668564502662756212012-08-16T19:41:22.460-06:002012-08-16T19:41:22.460-06:00I think pictures are another great way to document...I think pictures are another great way to document history, both great and small events. Your comments about choosing what to remember and what to forget were good. I do think that sometimes people have the choice to pick or they are forced into situations where they need to pick, such as being in such a difficult situation as your parents were. When the photos are taken and not been looked at in many years, it is still ok. Because when people have time to reopen the album, all the happiness and good memories would come back. They are deeply remembered in your minds. I could image when I am old, open the photo album of my entire life, it will feel good!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
